Today, I’d heard Celine Dion singing “Alone.”  The thought that immediately popped in my head was “I’ve heard this on Cold Case.  What episode was that?”  Needless to say, I was kind of surprised because it’s on her new album (since Cold Case only plays music from the time period of the cases).  Then I found out that it was originally performed by another group called Heart back in the 80s.

Overall, I find it interesting that I now remember songs in terms of what episode of Cold Case they were featured on.  For instance, “Apologize” by OneRepublic was at the end of “Sabotage,” episode 12 of season 5.  They didn’t play the version perturbed by Timbaland. (Yes, I realize he helped to gain popularity for the song… but it doesn’t change the fact that the song is great because of OneRepublic and not Timbaland.)  The episode had a very good ending, and I felt the song choice was appropriate considering what had occurred in the episode.

I think the main reason I associate songs with Cold Case episodes is because of the way Cold Case reminises on the events and outcomes while a song plays.  I guess I just didn’t realize how effective it was.  In any case, the episode ending with Heart’s “Alone” was “Lonely Hearts,” episode 9 of season 4.

Just something I found interesting about the power of television.  I wonder if they spend a lot of time picking the songs for the episodes, or if the songs just sort of come to them as they write and perform the show.
